Two year postdoctoral position in ethics, health
and law
The Université Paris Descartes is offering
a two year postdoctoral research fellowship to young
researchers, who are PhD graduates in any one of the
social and human sciences, law, or public health,
with some training or at least a strong interest in
ethical issues raised by medical and research practices,
and who wish to explore the problems and controversies
raised by the use a particular human substance or
body part for therapeutic, industrial or research
purposes. Numerous procedures - transfusion, insemination
and in vitro fertilisation, transplantation and grafts
- rely on elements of the human body to replace impaired
organs, tissues or cells. Moreover, certain substances
of human origin can be transformed to manufacture
drugs or medical material, while others can be either
immediately used or stored for research use. However,
these uses of the human body parts or substances raise
two kinds of problems: 1. on the one hand, there are
specific scientific, technical and organisational
difficulties related to the collection, transformation,
preservation, circulation and use of each body part;
and 2. there are major disagreements as to what constitutes
acceptable treatment of persons and bodies, as well
as concurring visions of the needs, interests, rights
and duties of the different protagonists involved.
Priority will be given to those projects that address
problems and controversies which have not been extensively
studied. Requirements: The candidate must have a PhD
in a relevant discipline with an excellent past-record
of achievement and less than 3 years of post-doctoral
experience. Candidates graduated from Paris Descartes
or working in Paris Descartes laboratories are not
eligible.
